Student Council Election Results
The votes are in! Congratulations to all newly elected members of the 2012-2013 Student Council, pictured above. Each classroom in grades 3-8 elected two Student Council Representatives this week. On Election Day, every student in grades 3-8 cast their ballot for this year's officers. The Student Council officers for 2012-13 are:

This Week's Schedule at Skinner West
Friday, November 9th is a half day of school for students, School Improvement Day:
- School Hours will be from 8:30am to 12:00pm
- Breakfast and Lunch will be available for all students
- The STAR program will not be available on this day or on other Half Days
- The Skinner Park and Union Park District program will be available on site from 12pm to 6pm (for those who are currently enrolled). Please remember to bring a snack.
Monday, November 12th there is NO SCHOOL in observance of Veteran's Day.
Tuesday, November 13th is Report Card Pick Up Day, no school for students:
- Report Card Pick Up Hours are 12 to 6:30.
- Check with your child's teacher for specific timing and procedures
- Also on Report Card Day- Pick up your PTO Catalogue Fundraiser Orders, browse the Book Fair in the library, buy a 2011-12 Skinner West Yearbook, and shop for a Gallery 111 t-shirt (see below articles for all details)
- Stop by the cafeteria to view all the recovered items from the first quarter of lost and found items. Items that are not retrieved will be donated.
Family Fun Night- Save The Date
The Skinner West PTO Forum is planning a Family Fun Night that will BLOW your SOCKS off!!!!! Parents and kids of all ages won't want to miss the Skinner West "Family Fun Lego and Game Night" on Friday, November 30th from 4:00-7:00PM! So put it on your calendar and save the date! This Fun Night will feature board and video games, TV game shows, Wii/xBox dance competitions and a Lego construction zone to name a few things.
Family Fun Night Volunteers Needed
Family Fun Night planning has begun and we are reaching out to all parents, teachers, each classroom and all the Skinner clubs and organizations to help and to host a booth at the family fun night festivities. In addition, we need volunteers to donate goods and services, donate items for a raffle and to donate prizes for each of the game areas and to donate or loan a variety of games for the event. Please volunteer online by clicking on this link and following the directions on the page to see the suggested booths and to sign up to volunteer or donate item.

Gallery 111: Breakfast in the Art Room
Support Skinner West's art programming by purchasing a Gallery 111 t-shirt for yourself or your child on report card pick up day (Nov. 13th) or by sending a check to Ms. Bovit in the art room, addressed to "Gallery 111". Youth size shirts (lt. blue/mustard, & black/neon orange) cost $15. Adult sizes (teal/orange & olive/lime green) cost $20.
Wear your Gallery 111 shirt to school and you are cordially invited to Gallery 111's Breakfast in the Art Room on Thursday, Nov. 15th, 8:00 to 8:30 a.m.
Gallery 111 is an organization within Skinner West that is run by parents, teachers & community volunteers that strive to provide approximately $20,000 in arts programming on an annual basis to every at Skinner West.

Skinner West now has 42 parents who have signed up to be Room Parents for this year! A special thanks goes out to all of them for having the courage and desire to take on such an important role at the school.

2011-12 Skinner West Yearbooks on Sale Now
The 2011-12 Skinner West Yearbooks are in and ready for you to purchase! They are colorful, memorable, and in stock now! The cost for a yearbook to commemorate your Superstar's 2011-12 school year is $30.00. See Mrs. Clark, our principal, to get your copy. They will be available on Tuesday Nov. 13th during Report card pick-up as well.
PTO FUNDRAISERS-Catalog Orders are In
The Fall Catalog Fundraiser orders are in and families should go to the Skinner gym on Report Card Day, Nov. 13th, from 12 to 6 pm, to pick up their orders.
The PTO needs 4 parent volunteers on Report Card Day, Tuesday, Nov. 13th, to assist wtih the catalog fundraiser pick-up.
- 2 parents are needed in the morning to help sort the catalog items and
- 2 parents are needed in the afternoon (until 6:00) to help parents pick up the orders.

Just a Reminder: The PTO's Entertainment Book Fundraiser ended on November 6th. All students were sent home with one Entertainment Book. These books are not free. If you have not done so already, please send in your $30 to cover the cost of the book or return the unsold book back to school by the end of the week.

Holiday Concerts are Coming!
Primary Solo Chorus Auditions have been taking place the last two weeks. The last audition takes place on Friday, November 9th 8:00 to 8:30. This is for 2nd and 3rd graders, the Season of Bells number (Pianists only, get music in advance).
Some of the December concert dates are already set! These concerts at City Hall and Block 37 are open to the public, so mark your calendar to attend and see our Superstars perform!
Monday, 12/10 Primary Chorus (2nd and 3rd Grades only) at Block 37 mall, 1 PM concert
Tuesday, 12/11 Primary Chorus (2nd and 3rd Grades only) at City Hall, 12 noon concert

Skinner Scholastic Fall Book Fair--Volunteers Needed
The K-8th Book fair will be held in the Skinner West Library from November 15-21,8:45-3:30 daily, open until 6:00 on November 20th. Students will visit the book fair with their class during the regular library period.
Volunteers are needed each day to assist the students as they shop, restock the books, and help keep the fair running smoothly.
Volunteers are also needed to help set up the fair. The set up date is November 14th and will start at 8:30.

KISS & GO: No Parking in Drop-off Area
Parents there are a number of congestion flow problems occurring on the Monroe Street side because parents are parking and leaving their cars for extended periods of time during the 8-9am morning drop-off. Please know that the drop off area is NOT intended for long term parking. It is NOT intended as an area for parents to park while they escort their children to their classroom. It is intended as a "Kiss-N-Go" area - this means that:
- Parents make sure that your child is ready to exit your car when pulling up to the drop off area: they have their bookbag, lunch box, coat, hats, gloves, etc.;
- Drive up to the drop off area;
- Parents remain in your cars;
- Kiss your kids while they're in the car;
- The kids jump out and
- ...you drive away.
Please do not stay longer then the time needed to watch your son or daughter walk into the school. Please don't drop your child off in the middle of street and don't block the alley or park in the alley when you're dropping off your kids. Due to the large amount of traffic occurring during drop off, parents are requested to follow this procedure. Please inform your caregivers and private transportation services of this request. We need to keep this area clear so that all parents have a place to pull up to drop off their kids. If you need to come into the school or you want to stay with your child until 8:30 - please find parking on the street in an area other than the drop off area.
We are trying to make sure that volunteers are available to assist with drop off. We are extremely grateful to parent, Jamal Ali , for helping us out with drop-off assistance for the past two months. If you are interested in volunteering please email the volunteer coordinator at firstname.lastname@example.org. We really need more volunteers in the morning to assist !

PE Uniform Sale
The PE 2012-13 Uniform Sale is underway. PE Uniforms are MANDATORY for all students. Students in grades K-5 must wear their PE uniform to school on their designated PE day(s). Upper grade students (grades 6-8) are allowed to change into their PE uniforms in the first 5 minutes of their PE class time, but have to change back into their clothes on their own time.
To order Skinner PE Uniforms for this year- or additional Skinner apparel- go to:
All orders must be placed on the website. Clothing purchased with our logo is acceptable for PE class. You can also go to the "Select Activity" drop down menu and select the "Phys. Ed" option. PE Uniforms need to be in Skinner school colors, either all purple or purple/gold, or they can be CPS uniform colors of navy blue and white. Although it is encouraged to purchase uniforms via mylocker.net, parents may send their kids to school on PE days in clothes purchased from outside vendors--as long as the colors are in accordance with CPS policy and are the purple/gold school colors or navy blue/white CPS colors. Any Skinner PE clothing purchased in previous years also is acceptable.
Finally, all students must have appropriate footwear to participate in PE classes. They must have gym shoes. Boots, flats, sandals, flip flops, dress shoes, high heels, and crocs are considered inappropriate in a movement setting. If a student does not have appropriate footwear ready when they come to the gym for class, they will not be able to participate for that period.
The goal is to have all Skinner students in their PE Uniforms by December 3rd. Technology Update - New Interactive Promethean Boards !You may have noticed that there is new technology in several of our classrooms. Eleven Promethean Interactive white boards have been installed in the classrooms.
An interactive whiteboard is a large display that connects to a computer and a projector. The projector projects the computer's desktop onto the board's surface, where users control the computer with a pen, finger, or other device. The board is typically mounted to a wall or floor stand. Various accessories, such as student response systems, enable interactivity.
The eleven lucky classrooms and teachers are: Ms. McSpadden, Ms. Rosenzweig, Mr. Lew, Mr. Chau, Mr. Cox, Mr. Carlson, Ms. Christiansen, Ms. Schildmeyer, Ms. Ellis, Ms. Rupp and Ms. Beaudry. Thanks to this years' CPS funds that were earmarked for technology and the Friends of Skinner West's Walk-a-Thon fundraiser from May 2012, classrooms are using technology to provide students another way of learning curriculum. Whiteboards provide the ability to present multimedia material that is verbal, visual, auditory, and interactive, which is essential to drawing today's students into the subject matter. A key benefit is boosting student motivation and participation.
Thanks to all the children and parents who helped raise funds from 2012's Skinner West Walk-a-thon. The results are truly rewarding for our Superstars!

Don't put all your eggs in one basket!! Remember, there are several ways for a sibling to enroll into Skinner for K-4th grades for the 2013-2014 school year. One is through applying for the Classical Program by completing the Selective Enrollment Application for Elementary Schools. The second is through completing a separate application (Options for Knowledge Standard Elementary Application) for the lottery for the neighborhood/magnet component of Skinner West. Both applications must be received by the Office of Academic Enhancement by Friday, December 14, 2012 via the online process at www.apply.cps.edu or by paper application. Best wishes to all of our siblings who will be participating in the testing and /or lottery process for enrollment.
