Congratulations Skinner West!!

On May 22nd, State Farm announced Skinner West's "Ready, Set, Tech" Cause as being one of the top 40 vote-receiving Causes that will receive a $25,000 grant to help address our current technology needs.

Thank you Skinner West community for your commitment and support during this entire voting process. Your dedication has paid off and we are now recipients of a $25,000 grant that will allow us to purchase laptops for our Superstars, allowing them to expand their technological experience beyond our computer lab, bringing it right into their classrooms.

Finally, let's extend a big THANK YOU to our very own 1st grade teacher, Ms. Staral. Ms. Staral originally submitted the "Ready, Set, Tech" Cause to State Farm, amongst 3,000+ other Causes. Of the 3,000+ proposals, Ms. Staral's proposal was chosen as one of the top 100 to be posted on Facebook where the community had a chance to vote on their favorite Cause. Again, THANK YOU Ms. Staral!

You can now make an online donation towards the Skinner West Walk-A-Thon by clicking here. Donations can be made securely online using a Google account. If you do not have a Google account, you will need to create one in order to complete your donation.

Thank you for your support!

Walk-a-Thon and Field Day

Attention Skinner Parents and Family Members:

We are still in need of volunteers for this year's Field Day/Walk-A-Thon events that will take place on Tuesday, June 5th!

12:15pm - 1:00pm - Lunch 6th-8th grade

12:15pm - 1:00pm - 3rd-5th grade Field Day

Please let us know if you are able to help out for:

  1. One Field Day session
  2. Both Field Day sessions
  3. The Walk-A-Thon

If you know of others, including family members, who are willing to help, please have them e-mail Ms. Westendorf (P.E. Teacher) as we can still use more volunteers.

Lastly, we are still seeking healthy food donations. If you are or know of a wholesaler, restaurant, or grocer who is willing to donate ANY amount of healthier food -  most importantly lunch, or snacks, fruit, veggies - to help nourish our Superstars during this event, please contact Marla Sedler from Friends of Skinner West (FOSW) at marlasedler@gmail.com.

Thank You!

"STAMP OUT HUNGER"

The 3rd grade Brownie Troop hosted a community service event at the Greater Food Depository near Midway to "stamp out hunger."  Our dedicated families braved the roads (with all the news of the NATO Summit road closures).

The brownies and their parent(s) helped pack "pasta sauce" for shelters and pantries across the city.  Our team was bright, joyful and full of energy as we worked through the afternoon.

A big thank you also for the other Brownie families who contributed non-perishables to the kids pack day.  We learned over 65,000 lbs of food are delivered each year, almost 1,000 lbs per week.  As many as 170 volunteers a day over 3 shifts to make this happen and we were part of that!!

Thanks again to the Brownies families for rounding out our Brownie school year with a successful community service event!!

The 2nd & 4th Graders Present History Fair

Students in second and fourth grades displayed their projects for the History Fair on May 17th in the gymnasium. This research-based project required students to prove a Chicago-related thesis, with supporting artifacts and captions.  So many interesting topics provided plenty of information for all of us to learn about our city.  We had a wonderful turnout and the children were enthusiastic about sharing what they had learned.  The teachers would like to thank all of the parents for their support, which helped to make this year's History Fair another great success!

Spring Concert Bulletin!

Due to space, there will be two Spring Concerts this year.

Have fun...Stay Sharp: Take a Summer Math Class

SelectiveMath is the latest initiative from SelectivePrep, Chicago's leading high school test preparation company. SelectiveMath's Summer Math Classes provide motivated students with the opportunity to explore and enjoy mathematics. We will show students that math is rewarding and fun--even cool.

SelectiveMath's week-long (M-F, 9-12 pm) workshops are designed to sharpen math skills and build math enthusiasm. Our workshops emphasize real world applications and incorporate puzzles and games so students get their hands dirty practicing core mathematical concepts.

SelectiveMath's Summer Math Classes are conveniently scheduled in August, so students get a jump on the new school year:
  • 6th/7th Grade Math Enrichment (for incoming 6th and 7th graders)
  • Algebra I (for advanced incoming 7th graders and incoming 8th graders)
  • Geometry I (for advanced incoming 8th graders and incoming 9th graders)
