Spotlight on Kindergarten

This year Skinner West has 5 kindergarten classes! March has been a fun-filled month for the children as they eagerly await spring! March is National Reading Month. Kindergarten began the month by celebrating Dr. Seuss. They made class projects and read several of his children's books. Some classrooms tasted green eggs and ham while others experimented with making Oobleck.

Students have been attending computer class weekly, practicing their math and reading skills on IXL and I-Ready.

This week started out exciting as students showed their St. Patrick's Day spirit by wearing all green! They entered the classroom to find things out of sort..... It appeared as though a little green someone had paid their classroom a visit.

As the end of third quarter quickly approaches, the kindergarteners are preparing for their 3rd research project. Ms. Wardanian's class is researching chocolate. Mr. Merkin's class is learning all about skyscrapers. Ms. Growe, Ms. Sobut, and Ms. Sauer's class are all studying the life cycle of plants and flowers.

Hard to believe that they will be 1st graders before we know it!

ballCongratulations to the
Boys & Girls Basketball Team for a Great Season!
5/6 Girls and Boys Teams Advance to City Championships

Skinner West Girls Basketball 5th/6th and 7th/8th had a great season this year.  Network 6 provided the girls with an opportunity to play with nine other teams.

Our 7th/8th Grade Girls Basketball team was led by our three 7th graders;   Iman A., Raven D., and Sarah T.  They qualified for the network playoffs and were in the fifth seed.   In our first game we faced Ogden, who was first in our network and came out as champions in the tournament.

Our 5th/6th Grade Girls Basketball team consisted of several veteran players from last year; Janice C., Simone H., Kennedy J., Katelyn M., & Rebekah R.  Alyssa A., Anisah A., Armarria D., Christiana K., and I'deyah R., were new gems that came on board this year.  Finally Julia S., though too young to play in the games, practiced with us and came to every game (she'll be ready next year!).  Together, this team had a remarkable season!  Last year we had finished second place in the network tournament.  We knew this year was going to be our year.  Our 5th/6th Grade Girls Basketball team are the Network 6 CHAMPIONS!  They are on their way to city.  We wish them luck.

Special thanks to Coach Mellos!

The 7/8 Boys' team qualified for the network playoffs with a season with 8 wins and 2 losses. In the first round, the team played a close game but were eliminated in the first round.
The 5/6 Grade Boys Basketball team had a great regular season going 9-0 for their second undefeated season in the last four years. The 5/6 Grade Skinner Superstars entered Saturday's Network 6 Championship a number 1 seed.
In the first game, Skinner beat Salazar Elementary 32-0 in a game that was called after the 3rd qtr.
In the second game, Skinner faced off against a big South Loop team and won 40-22, pulling away from a tight game in the 3rd qtr.
The third game was against Smyth elementary (defending Network Champions), and Skinner pulled out a tough victory 30-19.
In the last game for the Championship, Skinner faced an undefeated LaSalle 2 team and with great team defense stopped their star player. The game ended 30-20. Congratulations to the 5/6 Grade Skinner West Boys Basketball for winning the Network 6 Championship. City Playoffs schedule will be posted soon!
Thanks to Coaches Lomax and Werner for their efforts!

What is Skinner's Social Emotional Programming?

As School Counselor, it is a busy year working in so many capacities with our students.
  • Currently two group counseling sessions are running: the Sparkle Club, a self-esteem group and a Conflict Resolution group. Also, I meet with students individually, often on Fridays.
  • Our classroom based Social Emotional Learning (SEL) program began last school year and will continue to grow, expand and change each year. Learning objectives are based on State and National Standards that address the specific needs of Skinner West students and classes. Goals of the program include students acquiring knowledge, skills and attitude in areas of self-awareness, self -management, social awareness, relationship skills and responsible decision-making. This year, I teach approximately 24 classes per week in Social Emotional Learning.  We base our program using a variety of curriculum and this year we are incorporating new CPS endorsed programming such as Between Friends.
  • In late March and early April, the Cook County Sheriff Youth Service Department is coming to Skinner West to teach lessons on personal body safety for Kindergarten and First Graders and on May 1st conducting an assembly on Cyber-Bulling/ Internet Safety. In addition, 8th graders will receive instruction on What's Next Illinois.
  • For a weekly list of SEL classes, please check my wikipage often for current SEL, school counseling, high school information and resources. Click on my website HERE.
  • This year, the Bullying Committee merged to become the Bully Committee/Positive School Climate Committee, which includes responding to students' concerns of unkind behavior, and introducing a school wide positive school climate week of Random Acts of Kindness for the first week in May.
  • Questions?  Contact me before or after school (room 110), or email or call (773)534-7790

                                                                     Thank you,   Ms. Montgomery

It's Time for Music Performance Days!
KDG Thru 3rd Graders perform during Music Class
Room 311

In March and April, Kindergarten through 3rd Grade students will have a chance to perform for each other during their music classes. This is a great opportunity for piano students to try out their songs on the grand piano, and for violin, guitar, trombone, voice or any other performers to try out what they have been working on in their private music lessons.
We will informally invite students up to the front of the class where they will say their name and what they will be performing, and then perform. Ms. Maatouk will take a picture of each student who performs, and they will also get a Certificate of Bravery. Pictures from last year's Performance Days can be found under "Class Photos" on the Skinner Music Website:
