The Bilingual Advisory Committee (BAC) at Skinner West empowers parents of English Learners (ELs) to participate in their student's education and advocate for the academic, social, and cultural development of all ELs.
BAC meetings address issues relating to the education of students in Transitional Bilingual Education (TBE) or Transitional Program Instruction (TPI) instructional contexts. The meetings also provide information about CPS services, programs, and resources for students and families as well as train parents to effectively participate in the overall governance of bilingual education.
Every school implementing a state mandated TBE Program is required to form a BAC. CPS also recommends that parents of ELs at schools implementing a TPI also participate in BAC meetings.
BACs meet at the school at least five times a year and include parent training and workshops. Five officers are elected annually and report to the Local School Council. The BAC Handbook provides detailed information about how BACs are organized and function and are offered in multiple languages.
